A PhD Student or Postdoc Positions on 4D CT Imaging of the Brain

The Diagnostic Image Analysis Group (http://www.diagnijmegen.nl) at the Department of Radiology, Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, is offering a research position, to be filled by either a PhD candidate or a post-doctoral researcher.


The Diagnostic Image Analysis Group is a research division of the Department of Radiology of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre. Nijmegen is the oldest Dutch city with a rich history and one of the liveliest city centers in the Netherlands. Radboud University has over 17,000 students. Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (RUNMC) is a leading academic centre for medical science, education and health care with over 8,500 staff and 3,000 students.

The focus of the Diagnostic Image Analysis group is the development and validation of novel methods in a broad range of medical imaging applications. Research topics include image analysis, image segmentation, machine learning, and the design of decision support systems. Application areas include brain imaging, breast imaging, lung imaging and prostate imaging. Key to the success of the group is close cooperation with clinical partners and a disease oriented approach. Currently the group consists of twenty researchers including thirteen PhD students and support from four scientific programmers.

Job description

Computed Tomography (CT) imaging of the brain is an important step for diagnosis and treatment planning. The latest advances in CT technology enable dynamic scanning or perfusion imaging covering the complete brain with a temporal resolution of 0.35 seconds. This means you can see the in-flow and out-flow of the blood in real-time and obtain detailed functional information in addition to the anatomical information of the brain. We will have the most advanced CT scanner with large coverage installed in our hospital by mid 2011 and we closely collaborate with the manufacturer, Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation from Japan. Currently only two of these scanners have been installed in the Netherlands, and Nijmegen will be the third.

To fully exploit the potential of perfusion imaging, many issues need to be addressed on all levels from acquisition to image interpretation. These include radiation dose reduction strategies by scan protocol optimization, registration to compensate for patient movement, radiation dose reduction strategies by the development of noise filtering techniques, image reconstructions techniques, and high level image analysis algorithms for example the automatic detection of small aneurysms. All these technical studies are carried out in conjunction with clinical studies. Initially we focus on perfusion imaging of the brain, but soon we will extend our research to other body areas. Considering the large amount of research to be carried out for this project, two research positions are offered.

The project is part of our Neuro research line within DIAG Nijmegen and both positions are funded by Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation (Japan). There are strong ties with clinical researchers and the Medical Physics Group of our Radiology Department and we collaborate with the Department of Neurology in our hospital. We collaborate on a national level with several other (university) medical centres, and internationally with Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation (Japan), Fraunhofer Mevis (Germany) and others. As such, you work in a multi-disciplinary and strong team of motivated professionals, and there will be regular contact with our partners.


You should be a creative and enthusiastic researcher with a MSc or PhD degree in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or Biomedical Sciences or similar, with a clear interest to develop image analysis algorithms and an affinity with medical topics. The postdoc should have a strong track record. Good communication skills, and expertise in software development, preferably in C++, are essential.

Terms of employment

If you are appointed as a PhD student you will get the standard salary and secondary conditions for PhD students in the Netherlands. Your performance will be evaluated after 1 year. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 3 years. The research should result in a PhD thesis. If you are appointed as a postdoctoral researcher your salary depends on your level of seniority and relevant experiences, and will be competitive with comparable positions at Dutch universities. Initially your appointment will be for a period of 1 year and your performance is evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2 years.
