Two important functions of the lungs that are needed for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide are ventilation and perfusion. One or both of these functionalities could be hampered as a result of cardiopulmonary disease. Pulmonary embolism is one of those diseases where perfusion in the lung is reduced, because a blood clot is lodged in a pulmonary artery, disturbing blood flow. In the Netherlands, pulmonary embolism occurs in approximately 10,000 to 12,500 patients per year, and resulting in significant morbidityand mortality.
